No Debate: Hempstead is Struggling

Today a horde of journalists descends on Hempstead, NY, to cover the third and final presidential debate. ANP left the pack to hear from people outside of the media spotlight, people hit hard by our nation's crises at home and abroad.

DONATE TO JOCELYN HERE!

CODEPINK has just set up a secure donation page for Jocelyn Voltaire. You can donate any amount on this site and we will make sure it gets to her. Please pass this link along!
https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/424/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KE...

Try this maybe...

With so many wanting to help Jocelyn Voltaire out, since her house is being auctioned, there doesn't seem to be a way for them to donate. Any ideas?

I found these sites:

http://www.firstgiving.com/

http://www.networkforgood.org/Npo/fundraising/

Maybe someone can start a donation for her? I think anyone can do it...

no link to help

I tried the huff post link, but there is no mention of any specifics to help - did I miss it? Please mention details. Thanks.

Ms Voltaire's son

To beam_me_up:

Ms. Voltaire very likely speaks 3 languages (English, French, Haitian Patois). In French, "Navy" is "Marine". Perhaps she was mentally translating Marine as Navy.

You say that is an 'important detail', but I say cut her some slack for being multilingual (as you apparently are not), and, in case you didn't notice, she is rather distraught at the loss of her son and her home.

A good 'detective' would google her to see what they could find before they implied she's a fraud because she slipped and said Navy instead of Marines.

Award Winning Journalism

The reporter should receive a nomination for a Pulitzar Prize. It has sparked a firestorm of Americans helping their fellow American Jocelyne Voltaire. With the grassroot efforts going on today, many Americans, including myself will make a donation to Jocelyne. No amount is too small or too large. Great work Steven

HOW TO HELP - for now

Huffington Post and Daily Kos both have threads discussing how to help Ms. Voltaire.

Here are the links:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/15/113855/64/431/631144

Thanks for the concern. I'm glad the story had such an effect on people.

Yes and follow up

While I was interviewing her on camera, she stated multiple times that her son was in the Navy and even stated that he had served at a Naval Base in Spain. Perhaps she confused Navy for Marines and I did not challenge her or follow up.

But, yes, thank you for coming to ANP. We're new and we need to get our word out.

Ms Voltaire's Son...

This American News Project video was heart breaking, but I would like to ask the folks at ANP do a bit more homework on their subjects...

Ms Voltaire's son was not a "Soldier in the Navy" [3:40 mins in] from the picture, he appears to be a US Marine... (not a Soldier [US Army], Airman [US Airforce], or even a Seaman [US Navy]) please check the uniform and his hat....

Aside from this important detail, these issues need more coverage, and ANP is doing a great job!

Possible Listing Info.?

Hello again, I was able to find the following info. at whitepages.com:

Jocelyn C. Voltaire
10024 208th St
Queens Village, NY 11429-1039

The reporter did mention the Queens Village area in his report prior to interviewing Ms. Voltaire.

Hoping.

Ms. Voltaire in the news

I googled her and apparently politicians are using her as a pawn. Here's the article:

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/05/28/2008-05-28_political_riva...

Maybe others like us have gotten involved after this, but I still want to know what we can do

Count Me In

I would also like to know how I can help Jocelyn.
Any little thing that we can do to help her realize that people care and are thinking of her would be priceless.

I want to help, too

someone at ANP - please let us know how we can help Ms. Voltaire.

How can we help?

Is there a way to help the woman who lost her son and is losing her home?
